Quaking grass

Quaking grass (Briza media L.) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. Known for its distinctive, trembling flower heads that oscillate in the slightest breeze, it is a versatile plant widely appreciated for both its aesthetic value in landscape design and its ecological function in grassland ecosystems.

The species is native to a broad range of regions throughout Europe and parts of Asia. It thrives in various habitats, including dry meadows, forest edges, and calcareous grasslands. Its ability to tolerate low-nutrient soils and temporary water shortages makes it a resilient plant that fits well into semi-natural agricultural management systems.

Botanically, Briza media is a rhizomatous perennial that forms loose tufts of slender, upright stems reaching 20 to 60 cm in height. The foliage is narrow and deep green. The inflorescence is a delicate, spreading panicle bearing numerous flattened, heart-shaped spikelets that transition from green to golden or purple hues as they mature, creating a striking visual effect.

In terms of cultivation, Quaking grass prefers sunny locations with well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. It does not require high levels of fertilization and is generally low-maintenance. Planting is usually done in the spring, with seeds sown at a shallow depth. Consistent soil aeration and avoiding excessive nitrogen are key to preventing lodging and maintaining the natural structural integrity of the plant.

Economically, the plant is used for decorative purposes in gardens and floral arrangements due to its unique dry flower qualities. From an agricultural perspective, it contributes to the biodiversity of hay meadows, providing a nutritious component to forage. While generally hardy, the species can occasionally be affected by rust fungi or aphids, which are managed through proper spacing and regular field maintenance practices.
