Originating from tropical Southeast Asia, the plant thrives in warm, humid environments and naturally occurs in swampy areas or along riverbanks. Its geographical distribution has expanded globally as a kitchen garden herb, although it remains sensitive to frost and requires controlled indoor conditions or seasonal outdoor cultivation in temperate zones.

The plant features slender, lanceolate leaves that often exhibit a dark, chevron-shaped marking near the center. It develops a spreading growth habit, with succulent, jointed stems that facilitate easy propagation through stem cuttings.
