Description
Small-flowered Phacelia (Phacelia minor) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Boraginaceae family. This species is valued in agricultural practice for its unique properties as both a honey plant and a soil-improving crop. Despite being less widely distributed than Phacelia tanacetifolia, it retains all the essential advantages inherent to its genus.
The plant originates from the southwestern regions of North America, particularly California. In the wild, it favors open, sunny areas with moderately moist soil. In cultivation, Small-flowered Phacelia has adapted to various climatic zones, demonstrating high resistance to short-term droughts and late spring frosts, making it a promising candidate for inclusion in modern crop rotations.
Botanically, the plant features a branched stem reaching a height of 30–50 centimeters, covered with alternate pinnately lobed leaves. The inflorescences are arranged in cymes characteristic of the family, and the flowers have a bell shape, usually colored in shades of blue or purple. The flowering period lasts for about a month, providing a reliable food source for pollinators.
Regarding soil conditions, Small-flowered Phacelia is relatively undemanding; however, it shows the best growth performance on light, well-drained loams with a neutral or slightly acidic pH. The cultivation technology involves sowing in warmed soil at a depth of 1–2 centimeters. Controlling sowing density is crucial, as excessive thickness can lead to the development of fungal diseases in the lower part of the canopy.
The agricultural use of this crop is multifaceted: it is valued as a nectar source, a green manure (cover crop), and an additional source of fodder for livestock. As a green manure, Phacelia is capable of rapidly accumulating biomass, enriching the soil with organic matter, and improving its structure. Diseases and pests rarely affect the crop, although waterlogging may lead to root rot or aphid infestations.
