Botanically, Phaius flavus exhibits a sympodial growth habit, featuring distinct pseudobulbs that store water and nutrients. The plant can reach significant dimensions, with foliage often growing up to 60–90 centimeters in height. The inflorescences emerge from the base of the pseudobulbs, producing several large, showy flowers that are characterized by a subtle, pleasing fragrance and a long vase life.
Successful cultivation relies on providing a well-draining yet moisture-retentive substrate, typically composed of bark chips, sphagnum moss, and leaf mold. Light intensity should be kept low to moderate; direct, intense sunlight can cause severe leaf scorch. Consistent moisture levels are essential during the growing season, alongside periodic fertilization with low-concentration orchid-specific nutrients to support its robust vegetative growth.
The primary use of Phaius flavus is decorative, serving as a specimen plant in ornamental horticulture. Cultivators must be vigilant regarding common pests, such as spider mites and scale insects, which can affect the plant in controlled environments.
