Short-spike canary grass
Phalaris brachystachys
Description
Short-spike canary grass (lat. Phalaris brachystachys) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the grass family Poaceae. Within the agricultural sector, this crop is valued for its nutritional profile and its resilience in specific Mediterranean-type climates, making it a viable alternative for specialized feed production.
Originating from the Mediterranean region, the species has spread throughout various warm-temperate zones. Its natural habitat includes open fields and disturbed lands, where it benefits from high light intensity and moderate soil moisture levels during its active growing season.
The botanical structure consists of slender stems, linear foliage, and a distinctive, short, dense panicle that resembles a spike. It typically reaches a height of 30–90 cm. The seeds produced by the plant are small, glossy, and nutrient-dense, which is a key trait that facilitates its use in the commercial seed and bird feed market.
Regarding cultivation, the crop thrives in well-drained, fertile soils with a neutral pH. It requires a relatively long frost-free period to reach maturity. Agronomists recommend planting in rows to facilitate weed control, as the plant can be sensitive to competition during the seedling stage. Consistent irrigation during dry spells significantly boosts grain yield.
The primary agricultural use is the production of birdseed, often used as a component in complex mixtures for pet birds. Research is also exploring its biomass potential. To maintain crop health, it is essential to monitor for pests such as aphids and common cereal diseases like rusts or smuts, which may occur if the planting density is too high or if the climate becomes excessively humid.
