Bulbous canary grass (scientific name Phalaris tuberosa, often referred to as Phalaris aquatica) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. The plant is botanically distinguished by its ability to develop small, bulb-like storage organs at the base of the stems, which act as energy reserves allowing the grass to survive extended periods of drought and high heat.
Originating from the Mediterranean basin, the species has been introduced and successfully naturalized in various regions worldwide, most notably in Australia, New Zealand, and parts of the United States. Its adaptability to diverse soil conditions and tolerance for grazing pressure have made it a cornerstone species for permanent pasture improvement in Mediterranean-type climates.
The plant features a tufted growth habit with stems that can grow up to 1.5 meters tall. The foliage is generally grey-green and quite palatable to livestock during the active growing season. Its root system is exceptionally deep, which not only assists in drought survival but also makes it an excellent choice for stabilizing soil and preventing erosion in sensitive landscapes.
Agronomic requirements are centered on proper site selection. The crop performs best on well-drained, fertile loamy soils. Growers should prioritize autumn planting to allow the root system to establish during the cooler, wetter months. During the establishment phase, which is typically slow, weed control is essential to ensure that the seedling population becomes sufficiently dense to outcompete invading flora.
