Moth bean (Phaseolus aconitifolius), commonly known as moth or mat bean, is a hardy annual legume belonging to the Fabaceae family. While historically classified under Phaseolus, modern taxonomy often places it within the Vigna genus as Vigna aconitifolia. It is renowned globally for its exceptional drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor, sandy soils where other crops fail.
Originating from the arid regions of India and Pakistan, moth bean has been cultivated for millennia as a staple food and fodder crop. Its range extends across semi-arid environments in South Asia, and it has gained interest internationally for its role in sustainable agricultural systems in hot, dry regions. It is highly valued for its resilience in the face of unpredictable precipitation and high temperatures.
Botanically, the moth bean is a spreading, prostrate, or semi-erect herb with deeply lobed leaves that resemble those of the aconite plant, hence its species name.
