Historically associated with the genus Sedum, it has been reclassified into the Phedimus genus based on modern botanical research. This plant is increasingly recognized for its resilience and utility in both ornamental and ecological applications.

The native habitat of this species includes the Far East, specifically regions of the Russian Far East, the Korean Peninsula, and Northern China. It is commonly found on rocky outcrops, gravelly slopes, and open forest edges. Due to this evolutionary history, Phedimus selskianus is exceptionally well-adapted to harsh environmental conditions, including long dry spells and significant temperature variations.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its succulent, semi-woody stems and distinct serrated-edged leaves.
