Historically categorized under the Sedum genus, it is now classified within the distinct Phedimus genus. This plant is recognized for its unique star-shaped follicles and its resilience in arid environments, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping.
The native range of this species covers the Mediterranean basin, including Southern Europe, North Africa, and parts of Western Asia. It typically thrives in rocky outcrops, limestone crevices, and dry, open habitats. Its evolutionary adaptation to these harsh conditions allows it to survive in nutrient-poor environments with minimal water availability.
Botanically, Phedimus stellatus is characterized by succulent, fleshy leaves that often develop a reddish hue when exposed to intense solar radiation. The plant produces small, white to pale pink star-shaped flowers during the spring.
