Description
Branched broomrape (Phelipanthe ramosa, formerly Orobanche ramosa) is a destructive holoparasitic plant belonging to the Orobanchaceae family. Completely lacking chlorophyll, this plant is entirely dependent on host species for its survival, extracting water and nutrients directly from the host's vascular system through specialized structures called haustoria.
Originating from the Mediterranean region and parts of Western Asia, branched broomrape has spread globally due to its prolific seed production and efficient dispersal methods. It poses a significant threat to agriculture, targeting a wide range of dicotyledonous crops, including tomatoes, tobacco, peppers, and various legumes, often causing massive economic losses in infected areas.
Morphologically, the plant is characterized by a branched, fleshy stem ranging from 10 to 30 cm in height, with colors varying from pale yellow to blue or purple. It does not possess true roots or leaves. Instead, it forms a small root-like attachment point upon germination that penetrates the host root. A single spike can produce tens of thousands of microscopic seeds that remain viable in the soil for over a decade.
The life cycle is closely synchronized with the host plant. Germination is triggered specifically by strigolactones, which are compounds exuded by the roots of host plants. Due to its subterranean development, early detection is nearly impossible. Effective agronomic management requires a combination of strategies, including rigorous weed control, the use of trap crops, and in some regions, the use of selective chemical treatments.
