Icegrass (Phippsia algida) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the grass family (Poaceae). Within the framework of agricultural research, this species is viewed as a potential component of forage production in extreme northern latitudes, as it is capable of thriving in conditions where traditional agricultural crops cannot survive.
The plant originates naturally in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of both hemispheres, including coastal northern seas and high-altitude mountain ranges. Its distribution covers the Arctic, Greenland, and the northern territories of Eurasia and North America, where it has evolved to withstand extremely low temperatures and short growing seasons.

One of its key traits is high developmental plasticity, allowing it to complete its reproductive cycle during the continuous light of the polar day and early frost onset.
Agrotechnical cultivation of this species is currently focused on its potential as a wild forage resource. The plant prefers moist, often waterlogged soils rich in mineral elements. It does not require significant fertilizer inputs due to its slow growth rate, yet it demonstrates remarkable resilience on acidic or saline substrates common in permafrost areas.
The primary agricultural use of icegrass involves natural grazing for reindeer and other herbivores in the tundra biome. In the long term, there is significant interest in using this grass for the restoration of degraded lands in the High North, as it effectively prevents soil erosion and establishes a permanent vegetation cover.
