Native to South Asia, particularly India and Sri Lanka, this palm thrives in dry, rocky terrain and coastal environments. Its natural habitat is defined by high heat and periods of low precipitation. Consequently, its cultivation is restricted to frost-free regions where temperatures remain consistently warm throughout the year, as the plant lacks any significant cold tolerance.
Botanically, Phoenix pusilla features a short, stout trunk that rarely exceeds 3 to 4 meters in height. The fronds are stiff, pinnate, and armed with sharp spines at the base, which provide structural protection. The root system is resilient and capable of seeking water in nutrient-poor, rocky substrates. The plant produces small, edible drupes, although they lack the commercial mass of the common date palm.
