The geographic distribution of this species is primarily centered in tropical and subtropical regions where high humidity and temperature remain consistent throughout the year. It does not possess roots or specialized vascular systems, relying instead on ambient humidity and nutrients absorbed directly from the leaf surface or from atmospheric deposits.
Botanically, it forms microscopic, disc-shaped thalli that spread radially across the leaf surface. This structure allows the organism to maximize surface contact, which is essential for nutrient uptake and protection from desiccation. The algae reproduce via flagellated zoospores, which allow them to spread rapidly during periods of rainfall or high humidity.
While not a cultivated crop, Phycopeltis epiphyton can appear in agricultural settings, particularly in orchards or greenhouses with high humidity levels. Its presence is often considered a biological indicator of poor air circulation and excessive moisture, which may negatively impact the photosynthetic capacity of the host plant if the coverage becomes too dense.
