The red root floater (Latin: Phyllanthus fluitans) is a floating aquatic plant belonging to the family Phyllanthaceae. Native to the tropical regions of South America, specifically the Amazon River basin, this species is highly valued in the aquarium hobby for its rapid growth, unique appearance, and ability to improve water quality in closed aquatic systems.
In its natural habitat, the plant thrives in slow-moving or stagnant tropical waters. It is an opportunistic species that adapts quickly to high light environments, which are essential for the development of its signature red-colored roots and leaves. The plant exhibits a distinct symmetry, with small leaves that branch out to form thick, carpet-like structures on the water surface.
Botanically, Phyllanthus fluitans features alternate leaves and a dense, adventitious root system that hangs into the water column. The intensity of the red pigment in its roots and leaves is directly dependent on light intensity and the availability of iron and micronutrients in the water. Under low light conditions, the plant remains predominantly green.
Cultivation requirements involve maintaining water temperatures between 22°C and 28°C and providing consistent, high-intensity artificial or natural lighting. The plant is sensitive to water flow; strong surface currents can submerge the leaves and lead to decay. A stable, nutrient-rich water column is necessary to support its vigorous vegetative growth cycle.
Economically and practically, the red root floater acts as a highly efficient nutrient sink, absorbing nitrates and phosphates that would otherwise fuel nuisance algae growth. Its sprawling root system also provides essential shelter and foraging grounds for juvenile fish and shrimp. While generally robust, the plant can be susceptible to fungal infections if the humidity above the water surface is too high and ventilation is inadequate.
