Native to eastern China, the species thrives in subtropical to temperate climates. Its natural range has expanded through human cultivation, where it is favored for its cold hardiness compared to other bamboo species. It is particularly noted for its ability to grow in regions where other members of the genus might struggle due to winter frost or fluctuating temperatures.

The botanical structure consists of strong, upright culms that can grow up to 10 meters in height under ideal conditions.
