Bhutan pine (Pinus bhutanica) is a rare coniferous species belonging to the Pinaceae family. It is distinct for its specific foliage structure and cone morphology, placing it within the white pine group. Recognized as a significant element of the Himalayan forest biodiversity, this species is of particular interest to arborists and botanists worldwide due to its unique genetic background.

The native range of this tree is concentrated in the high-altitude eastern Himalayas, specifically within Bhutan and adjacent regions of India and China. It flourishes in subalpine environments, typically between 1,700 and 2,700 meters above sea level, where it favors steep slopes with high rainfall and cool, misty atmospheric conditions.

Botanically, the species is characterized by its tall, reaching stature, often growing up to 30 meters. The most striking features are its long, pendulous needles, bundled in groups of five, and its large, cylindrical cones that can measure up to 20 centimeters in length. The bark is relatively smooth in younger trees, developing deep fissures as the tree matures.

Successful cultivation of Pinus bhutanica requires mimicking its natural mountainous habitat. The tree demands well-drained, acidic, organic-rich soil and cannot tolerate waterlogged conditions, which lead to root decay. It performs best in regions with cool, humid summers and consistent moisture levels. Shade protection is recommended for saplings to prevent desiccation from intense sunlight.
