Native to the mountain ranges of Mexico, this species is highly regarded for its robust stature and exceptionally long, drooping needles that can reach lengths of up to 30 centimeters, creating a unique texture.

In its natural habitat, this species thrives in the high-altitude regions of Mexican states such as Oaxaca and Puebla. It is adapted to a climate characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons, typically found at elevations between 1,000 and 2,500 meters. The tree has evolved to survive in mountainous terrain with varying levels of precipitation.

Botanically, Pinus devoniana is characterized by fascicles of 5–8 needles and large, conical cones.
