The native distribution of this species is limited to the mountainous regions of Southern China, specifically in Guangxi and Hainan provinces, as well as parts of Vietnam. It typically thrives at elevations between 500 and 1500 meters, where it occupies well-drained slopes. This specific habitat requirement makes it a specialized species that is not commonly found in large-scale commercial plantations.

Botanically, Pinus fenzeliana is characterized by needles arranged in fascicles of five. The needles are notably thin and display a deep green color, which persists throughout the year. The cones are ovate and hold large seeds, which are dispersed in environments that mimic their natural alpine or high-altitude forest conditions. Mature trees can achieve heights of up to 25 meters under ideal circumstances.

When considering the cultivation of Fenzel pine, focus must be placed on soil aeration and drainage. The species prefers slightly acidic, well-draining substrates to prevent root saturation. In terms of climate, it performs best in regions with mild winters and consistent moisture levels, avoiding extreme drought or prolonged waterlogging.
