Torrey pine (Pinus torreyana) is a rare species of pine tree in the family Pinaceae. Renowned for its extreme rarity, it is categorized as an endangered species in the wild. This tree serves as a subject of intense conservation efforts and represents a unique genetic lineage within the Pinus genus, requiring specialized knowledge for its successful cultivation.

The native distribution of this species is extremely limited, naturally occurring only in a small coastal area of San Diego County and on Santa Rosa Island in California, USA. This highly specific habitat defines its environmental preferences. Because it has evolved in such isolated conditions, the species possesses remarkable adaptation mechanisms to survive in nutrient-poor and sandy soils.

Botanically, Pinus torreyana is characterized by long, stiff needles grouped in bundles of five and exceptionally heavy, woody cones containing large, nutrient-rich seeds. As a tree, it can grow up to 15 meters tall, often developing twisted, wind-swept shapes when grown in exposed coastal environments. The bark is typically reddish-brown and thick, providing protection against minor fires.

For successful cultivation, the Torrey pine requires well-drained, sandy, or rocky soil. It is highly sensitive to root rot, which makes avoiding overwatering a critical aspect of its agrotechnical care. It thrives in Mediterranean-type climates with cool, moist winters and warm, dry summers. It does not require high levels of fertilization; in fact, excessive nutrients can lead to weak growth.

In terms of management and protection, the species can be susceptible to pests such as bark beetles and tip moths. Pest control should rely on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, including regular inspection and removal of infested parts.
