Green ricegrass (Latin name: Piptatherum virescens) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the grass family Poaceae. It is a robust species well-adapted to harsh environmental conditions, making it an interesting candidate for low-input agricultural systems, especially in arid or semi-arid regions where conventional forage grasses might fail.

The native distribution area of Piptatherum virescens covers mountainous and rocky terrains across Southern Europe, the Caucasus, and parts of Central Asia. The plant thrives in well-drained, nutrient-poor, or calcareous soils, demonstrating excellent adaptation to slopes and areas with thin topsoil layers where moisture retention is usually limited.
