The Atlantic pistachio (lat. Pistacia atlantica) is a deciduous tree belonging to the Anacardiaceae family. In modern agricultural practice, it is widely recognized for its vigor and resilience, serving as a primary rootstock for the commercial Pistacia vera (true pistachio), especially in regions with challenging soil and climate conditions.

Its natural origin spans across North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of the Mediterranean. Historically, this species has been vital for local ecosystems, growing in semi-arid and mountainous landscapes where other fruit trees fail to establish. It thrives in environments characterized by long, hot summers and poor soil quality.

Botanically, it is a hardy tree with an extensive root system that enables it to access deep water reservoirs. The tree features pinnate leaves with a leathery texture and produces small, round drupes. As a dioecious plant, it requires both male and female trees in close proximity to ensure successful pollination and fruit production.

The cultivation requirements are centered around well-drained, alkaline, and calcareous soils. The tree is exceptionally drought-tolerant and can survive significant temperature fluctuations.
