Pitahaya, widely known as dragon fruit, is a perennial epiphytic climbing plant belonging to the Cactaceae family. The species Selenicereus monacanthus is characterized by its triangular stems with prominent areoles and large, aromatic flowers that bloom primarily at night. This crop is valued not only for its ornamental qualities but also for its nutritious fruits, which are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and essential minerals.

The plant originates from tropical regions of Central and South America, where it typically grows in forest canopies using aerial roots to anchor onto trees or rocky surfaces. Currently, commercial cultivation of pitahaya is established in Southeast Asia, Israel, Mexico, and the United States. The plant requires a tropical or subtropical climate, characterized by alternating cycles of humidity and relative dryness, which are essential for stimulating flower bud development.

Successful cultivation requires well-drained, porous soils rich in organic matter with a slightly acidic pH level. The ideal temperature for growth ranges between +20°C and +30°C, while exposure to temperatures below +5°C can cause severe tissue damage. The agrotechnical management involves providing sturdy vertical support systems for the climbing stems and installing drip irrigation to ensure moisture levels remain optimal without waterlogging the root zone.

The economic utilization of pitahaya spans the fresh produce market, juice and jam production, and various culinary applications. Recognized as a health-promoting superfood due to its low calorie and high nutrient profile, the global demand for dragon fruit continues to rise. Beyond its food-related applications, the plant is increasingly used in landscaping and ornamental horticulture, particularly for its spectacular, large nocturnal flowers.

Major agronomic challenges are often associated with fungal diseases, such as anthracnose and stem rot, which are exacerbated by high humidity and poor plantation ventilation. Common pests affecting the crop include mealybugs, aphids, and various mite species. Sustainable management relies on integrated pest management (IPM) practices, including regular pruning for airflow, precise water management, and the use of targeted biological or chemical control agents.
