Sea plantain

Sea plantain (Plantago maritima) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Plantaginaceae family. As a halophyte, it is naturally adapted to high salinity environments, thriving in coastal salt marshes and estuaries where conventional agricultural crops struggle to survive due to excessive sodium concentrations in the soil.

The native range of this species extends throughout the Northern Hemisphere, including the coasts of Europe, North America, and parts of the Arctic. It naturally populates saline maritime areas, sand dunes, and rock crevices. Its ability to tolerate salt spray and maritime climatic extremes defines its ecological niche and potential for specialty agriculture.
