Fendler's bluegrass

Fendler's bluegrass (Poa fendleriana) is a perennial bunchgrass belonging to the Poaceae family. Known for its remarkable resilience, this species is a staple in many rangeland ecosystems and serves as a significant forage resource in challenging environmental conditions.

The plant is native to Western North America, with a broad distribution range spanning from British Columbia in Canada down through the United States to Northern Mexico. It is commonly found in mountainous terrains, forest openings, and arid shrublands, where it has evolved to thrive in soils that are often unsuitable for less hardy agricultural crops.

Botanically, Fendler's bluegrass is defined by its dense, tufted growth habit and deep root system. The culms typically grow between 20 and 60 cm in height. The foliage is largely basal, featuring narrow, folded leaves that provide excellent moisture retention, allowing the plant to remain green during periods when other forage species become dormant.

In terms of agricultural requirements, the species is highly adaptable to well-drained, coarse-textured soils, including those with significant gravel or sand content. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant and cold-hardy, making it a valuable candidate for restoration projects in arid climates. Standard management involves rotational grazing to allow for natural seed head development and regrowth.

The primary economic use of Fendler's bluegrass is as a high-quality forage grass. Its key advantages include:
