Crimean bluegrass (Poa taurica) is a perennial grass species belonging to the family Poaceae. It is recognized as a hardy plant species that plays a significant role in maintaining the stability of arid grasslands and steppe ecosystems, particularly in its native regions.
The plant is native to the Crimean Peninsula and surrounding regions of the Black Sea area. It has adapted to diverse environmental conditions, thriving on rocky slopes and nutrient-poor soils where competitive pressure from other, less drought-tolerant grasses is typically minimal.
Botanically, Crimean bluegrass features dense tussock-forming growth, characterized by narrow, gray-green leaves and a robust root system. This structure enables the plant to withstand extended periods of drought by accessing moisture at various soil depths and prevents soil erosion in hilly terrains.
Agrotechnically, this crop requires well-drained, alkaline or calcareous soils to reach its full potential. While it is highly resilient to temperature fluctuations, optimal growth is observed in areas with moderate spring rainfall. It is generally considered a low-maintenance crop, suitable for sustainable grassland restoration projects.
