The plant is native to specific tropical regions in South America. Its natural habitat consists of rocky riverbeds where the current is constant and strong. The plant thrives in environments that would be considered hostile for most other botanical species, using specialized holdfasts to anchor itself securely to submerged rocks.
Botanical characteristics of this species include a highly reduced body structure that lacks typical stems and leaves as seen in terrestrial plants. Instead, it develops a thallus-like structure that clings to the substrate.
