The plant is native to the coastal regions of Europe, particularly found along the shores of the Baltic and North Seas. It typically inhabits sandy dunes and salt-tolerant vegetation zones where few other species can establish themselves due to the mobile nature of the substrate and high salinity levels.

Botanically, Ray's knotgrass is recognized by its prostrate, sprawling growth habit, which allows it to cover the ground effectively.
