Description

Pontederia korsakowii, formerly classified under the genus Monochoria, is a perennial aquatic plant belonging to the Pontederiaceae family. It is increasingly recognized in sustainable agriculture as a specialized crop suitable for wetland farming and paddy field integration.

The plant is native to the temperate and subtropical regions of East Asia, including parts of the Russian Far East, China, and Japan. It thrives in stagnant or slow-moving freshwater environments, such as marshes, ponds, and floodplains, where it has historically been gathered by local populations for subsistence.

Botanically, it features fleshy, broad leaves and a robust rhizome system that anchors the plant in soft, nutrient-rich sediments. The inflorescences are characterized by clusters of showy violet-blue flowers. Its rapid growth cycle allows for multiple harvests throughout the warm season, provided that water levels are consistently managed.

Cultivation requirements necessitate silty, nutrient-dense substrates with a pH balance between 6.0 and 7.5. The plant is highly sensitive to cold snaps and requires a frost-free growing season with temperatures consistently above 20°C. Proper water depth regulation is the most critical factor, as seedlings require shallower water compared to mature plants.

Agricultural use is primarily focused on human consumption and forage.
