The Yunnan poplar (Populus yunnanensis) is a fast-growing deciduous tree species that belongs to the willow family, Salicaceae. It is highly regarded in modern forestry for its exceptional growth rate and ability to produce a significant volume of wood biomass within a relatively short rotation cycle.

The species is native to the southwestern parts of China, particularly in the Yunnan province. It naturally occurs in mountainous river valleys, where it thrives in moist, nutrient-rich environments. Through deliberate introduction, its cultivation has spread across various regions globally that share similar climatic characteristics suitable for the poplar's development.

Botanically, the Yunnan poplar is characterized by a straight, strong trunk and large, glossy, ovate-shaped leaves. The tree can reach substantial heights, forming a vigorous and symmetrical canopy.
