Common purslane

Common purslane (Portulaca oleracea) is an annual succulent plant belonging to the Portulacaceae family. Often overlooked as a weed, it is recognized globally as a nutritionally dense vegetable, containing high levels of alpha-linolenic acid, vitamin C, and various bioactive compounds that offer significant health benefits.

The plant is native to tropical regions but has successfully naturalized across temperate and tropical zones worldwide. It is cultivated as a commercial vegetable crop in many parts of the Mediterranean, Central Asia, and the Middle East, where it is appreciated for its crisp texture and refreshing, slightly sour taste.

Botanically, purslane is characterized by prostrate, succulent stems and fleshy leaves. It is a highly efficient plant that utilizes Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) for photosynthesis, allowing it to survive extreme drought conditions. The flowers are small, yellow, and ephemeral, usually opening only under bright sunlight.

For optimal agricultural production, purslane requires warm temperatures and full sun exposure. It grows best in sandy, well-draining soils with moderate fertility. Planting should occur after the final spring frost, as the crop is very sensitive to cold. Maintenance involves thinning dense patches to ensure air circulation and providing adequate hydration to promote rapid vegetative growth.
