Curly pondweed

Curly pondweed (Potamogeton crispus L.) is a perennial submerged aquatic plant belonging to the Potamogetonaceae family. It is recognized for its unique ability to thrive in various aquatic environments, ranging from freshwater ponds to slow-moving irrigation canals.

Originally native to Eurasia, Africa, and Australia, this plant has spread globally. In an agricultural context, particularly in aquaculture, it is often viewed as a functional component of pond ecosystems, supporting the food web by providing habitats for aquatic invertebrates and young fish.

The botanical structure of the plant is defined by its stiff, reddish-green to brownish leaves with serrated margins, which appear curly or wavy. It displays high environmental plasticity, utilizing specialized overwintering buds known as turions that remain dormant in the sediment until favorable growing conditions return.

The plant thrives in nutrient-rich, silty substrates with stable light availability. Regarding agrotechnical requirements, it favors temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. Effective management involves regulating nutrient runoff in the catchment area to prevent excessive growth, as it can occasionally become invasive in shallow irrigation systems.

The economic and ecological utility of curly pondweed includes:

• Enhancing water clarity through nutrient uptake from sediments.
• Providing nursery habitats for juvenile aquaculture species.

Typical diseases include localized fungal infections in low-flow, high-heat conditions. Pests such as leaf-feeding insects and snails may impact growth, but they are rarely considered a threat to commercial production. Sustainable management often involves mechanical harvesting during peak growth seasons to maintain proper water flow in irrigation channels.
