Clusius's cinquefoil

Clusius's cinquefoil (Potentilla clusiana) is a perennial herb belonging to the Rosaceae family. Native to the limestone mountain ranges of the Eastern Alps, it is highly regarded in alpine gardening for its compact, mat-forming growth habit and beautiful white spring flowers. It is named after the renowned botanist Carolus Clusius, reflecting its historical significance in European mountain flora.

The plant originates from the high-altitude environments of the Alps, where it naturally thrives on rocky outcrops and scree slopes. In an agricultural and horticultural context, the species is cultivated primarily for specialized rock gardens and botanical collections that require hardy, drought-tolerant, and low-maintenance plants that can withstand significant temperature fluctuations.

Botanically, Potentilla clusiana is characterized by its palmately compound leaves that form dense rosettes, which eventually develop into sturdy, low-lying cushions. The flowers are typically white, often featuring a subtle yellow center, and are supported by short, woody stems. The root system is deep and expansive relative to the plant size, allowing it to extract moisture from narrow crevices in rocks.
