Large-flowered cinquefoil (Potentilla megalantha) is a herbaceous perennial belonging to the Rosaceae family. This species is highly regarded in horticulture for its compact growth habit, large showy yellow blossoms, and attractive silver-hued foliage that remains decorative throughout the growing season.

The plant originates from East Asia, specifically from the mountainous regions of Japan. Because of its native habitat, it possesses natural hardiness and resilience, allowing it to thrive in diverse climatic conditions, provided that its specific requirements for sunlight and substrate composition are consistently met.

Botanically, it forms low-growing mounds typically reaching 20 to 30 centimeters in height. The foliage is trifoliate and covered with dense, silky hairs that give the plant a silvery texture. The bright yellow flowers are remarkably large for the size of the plant, blooming in late spring to early summer and adding significant visual appeal to the garden.

Agricultural and gardening requirements focus on excellent drainage and full sun exposure. It is a drought-tolerant species once established, but it suffers in heavy, waterlogged soils. Ideally, the soil should be gritty and neutral to slightly alkaline, ensuring that water drains away quickly from the root crown to prevent rot.
