Marsh cinquefoil (Potentilla palustris) is a perennial wetland plant belonging to the Rosaceae family. Known for its medicinal properties, it is increasingly viewed as a valuable crop for sustainable wetland farming or paludiculture. The plant is distinct for its creeping woody rhizomes and dark purple flowers.

The origin of this species is linked to the temperate and arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It thrives in boggy habitats, including marshes, fens, and the damp edges of lakes. Its ability to sequester carbon in peat-rich soils makes it an ecologically significant crop for land restoration projects.

Botanically, the plant features long, branched rhizomes that grow horizontally in wet substrates. The stems are typically reddish, growing up to 60 cm in height. The foliage is compound, with five- to seven-lobed leaves that provide dense ground cover. During the summer, it produces attractive star-shaped flowers.

Cultivation requirements focus heavily on water management. The soil must be consistently saturated, with high peat content and acidic to neutral reaction. Unlike typical field crops, marsh cinquefoil requires specific flood irrigation techniques to prevent moisture stress. Propagation is best achieved by dividing mature rhizome segments during the dormant period.

The plant is highly valued in pharmaceutical industries for its tannin-rich rhizomes, which are used to produce extracts for anti-inflammatory medications. In terms of pest management, the crop is generally resilient, though excessive stagnant water during peak summer heat can lead to root rot. Maintaining a slow but steady flow of groundwater is essential for keeping the crop healthy.
