Spreading cinquefoil

Spreading cinquefoil (lat. Potentilla supina) is an annual or biennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Rosaceae family. In agronomy, it is identified as a persistent weed species that thrives in moist, disturbed environments and poses a challenge to crop productivity in various temperate regions of the world.

Originating from Eurasia, this plant has a wide distribution range. It typically colonizes areas with high soil moisture, such as floodplains, irrigation channels, and cultivated fields that suffer from poor drainage. Its ability to tolerate periodic waterlogging makes it a dominant species in low-lying agricultural terrains.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its prostrate, spreading stems that can reach up to 50 cm in length and readily root at the nodes. The leaves are pinnately compound, and the small, five-petaled yellow flowers appear in leaf axils. The plant propagates exclusively through abundant seed production, allowing it to remain in the soil seed bank for several years.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical practices. Agronomic strategies include improving soil drainage and implementing vigorous crop rotations to disrupt the growth cycle of the weed. Mechanical cultivation is highly effective during the early stages of growth, preventing the stems from rooting and spreading across the field.

The economic impact of spreading cinquefoil is mainly due to its competition for water and soil nutrients, which can significantly reduce crop yields in infested fields. While it does not serve as a primary host for major agricultural pests, it contributes to the overall weed pressure, necessitating integrated weed management (IWM) programs to ensure the long-term health and productivity of the cultivated crops.
