Formerly classified within the Scilla genus, it has been reclassified to the Prospero genus based on morphological and genetic evidence. This plant is a unique ornamental species known for its late-season flowering cycle, which stands out among typical spring-blooming bulbous crops.
The plant is native to the Mediterranean region, Western, and Central Europe, where it thrives in open, sunny grasslands and rocky habitats. In agricultural and horticultural contexts, it is grown for decorative purposes in rock gardens, borders, and naturalized landscapes. Its ability to produce flowers when the garden landscape begins to fade makes it a valuable asset for late-summer and early-autumn aesthetics.
Botanically, the Autumn squill consists of a small bulb that produces narrow, basal leaves.
