Description
Prosthechea radiata is a perennial epiphytic plant species classified within the family Orchidaceae. In commercial horticulture and botanical collections, this plant is highly regarded for its distinct, clove-scented flowers and its relatively compact growth habit, making it suitable for specialized greenhouse environments.
The native distribution of this species spans the tropical regions of Central and South America, extending from Mexico through various Caribbean nations. Its natural habitat consists primarily of humid montane forests, where it thrives in elevated positions on tree trunks, benefiting from excellent air circulation and periodic moisture from rainfall and tropical mists.
Botanically, the plant features sympodial growth with pseudobulbs that store water and nutrients, allowing the plant to withstand periods of lower moisture availability. The leaves are leathery, oblong, and persist for several years. The inflorescence emerges from the top of mature pseudobulbs, displaying multiple cream-colored flowers adorned with dark, radial markings on the labellum.
Successful cultivation requires mimicry of its natural epiphytic environment. The preferred substrate is a coarse, well-draining mixture of fir bark, charcoal, and perlite, which prevents root asphyxiation.
