Protea coronata is a remarkable species belonging to the Proteaceae family. It is widely cultivated for the commercial flower industry, prized for its unique, crown-like inflorescences that offer exceptional vase life and aesthetic appeal in high-end floral arrangements.

Originating from the fynbos regions of South Africa, this plant is adapted to Mediterranean-style climates. Today, it is farmed extensively in regions like Australia, New Zealand, and California, as well as in controlled greenhouse environments, where growers can mimic the specific light and moisture levels required for healthy development.

Botanically, this evergreen shrub can grow up to 3 meters tall. Its foliage is thick and leathery, providing a strong backdrop to the striking, cabbage-shaped flower heads. The "flowers" are actually a dense cluster of tiny florets protected by large, colourful bracts, which are the main focus for commercial harvesting.

Agronomically, Protea coronata requires specific soil conditions—most importantly, excellent drainage and acidic pH levels. It is highly intolerant of phosphorus; therefore, standard fertilizers must be avoided in favor of specialized products formulated for proteas. The crop thrives in full sun and requires protection from frost, as even minor temperature drops can damage the inflorescences.
