Description
Pseudolithos dodsonianus is an exceptionally rare and fascinating succulent species belonging to the family Apocynaceae. It is widely recognized for its extreme morphological resemblance to volcanic stones, a survival mechanism known as mimicry, which protects it from herbivorous animals in its harsh native environment.
The plant is native to the arid regions of Somalia, located in the Horn of Africa. In these environments, it grows primarily in rocky substrates, enduring long periods of drought and high heat. This natural adaptation makes it one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, species to keep in a managed horticultural environment.
Botanically, the species is defined by its compact, tuberous, and tuberculate stem. It lacks leaves, relying entirely on the stem for photosynthesis and water storage. Its color ranges from pale green to brownish-grey, effectively blending into the rocky outcrops of its habitat. The inflorescences are small and structurally complex, typical of the Stapeliads group.
The cultivation requirements are strict and unforgiving. It requires a highly porous, inorganic substrate, such as a mix of pumice, perlite, and coarse sand. Drainage must be impeccable, as the plant is highly susceptible to root rot if moisture lingers in the soil. Adequate light is crucial, though it should be filtered to avoid scorching the sensitive outer epidermis of the stem.
In terms of хозяйственного (horticultural) use, it is primarily found in specialized private collections and botanical institutions. Propagation is difficult, often carried out via careful grafting onto more robust species, as the plants are prone to various fungal and bacterial infections if the humidity is too high or the temperature drops too low during the rest period.
