Matgrass (scientific name Psilurus incurvus) is an annual grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. It is recognized in agronomy primarily for its ability to colonize arid environments where moisture is a limiting factor for more traditional forage crops.
The origin of this species is traced to the Mediterranean basin. Its natural distribution range extends across Southern Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Central Asia. It thrives in open, sun-exposed habitats, favoring rocky or sandy soils that require high drought tolerance and low competition from larger plant species.
Botanically, Psilurus incurvus is characterized by thin, wire-like leaves and a distinct curved spike-like inflorescence, from which its Latin name is derived. The plant typically reaches a height of 15 to 30 centimeters. Its shallow, fibrous root system allows for rapid absorption of brief moisture events during the spring season, typical of its Mediterranean climate.
Agronomic requirements emphasize the need for well-drained, porous soils. The species does not tolerate waterlogging or high-fertility soils, which might favor faster-growing competing weeds. Cultivation is minimal, as it is mostly managed as a part of natural pasture systems rather than through intensive commercial seeding and fertilization regimes.
The primary economic use is as a secondary grazing resource for small livestock in the early spring months. Its nutritional value is modest but significant in arid zones. Common issues include susceptibility to fungal pathogens during humid springs and damage from typical grass-feeding insects, such as aphids and specialized coleopterans, though it is generally considered resilient in its native ecological niche.
