Pterocarpus indicus Willd., commonly known as the narra tree, is a significant tropical species belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is highly valued for its durable and aesthetically pleasing timber, which is often used in luxury furniture making and interior design. The tree is characterized by its large, spreading canopy and potential for significant height, reaching up to 30 meters.

The native range of this species covers Southeast Asia, specifically the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia, as well as various Pacific island chains. Due to its hardiness and rapid growth in optimal conditions, it has been introduced to many tropical regions globally for reforestation projects and ornamental purposes in urban landscapes.

Botanically, Pterocarpus indicus is recognized by its pinnate leaves and vibrant yellow, fragrant flowers that typically bloom during the wet season. The fruit is a distinctive flat, circular pod with a wing-like margin that aids in wind dispersal. Like many legumes, it forms a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria to fix atmospheric nitrogen, playing an essential role in improving the nutrient profile of its environment.
