The Holly-leaved oak (Quercus aquifolioides) is an evergreen tree species belonging to the Fagaceae family. Its specific epithet, aquifolioides, indicates that its foliage resembles that of the Ilex (holly) genus, characterized by rigid, spiny-toothed leaves. This species is highly specialized, having evolved to survive in demanding alpine environments.

The plant originates from the high-altitude mountainous regions of Southwestern China, particularly in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, and extends into the Tibetan Plateau. Its natural habitat is located at altitudes ranging from 2000 to 4000 meters. Due to these geographical origins, it has developed unique physiological mechanisms to endure extreme environmental conditions.

Botanically, this oak grows as either a shrub or a medium-sized tree, forming dense canopies. The leaves are thick, leathery, and possess distinct marginal spines, which serve as an evolutionary adaptation to prevent water loss and deter herbivores. The acorns are relatively small, acting as a crucial food source for various alpine wildlife species.

In terms of cultivation, the species requires excellent soil drainage and high solar radiation. It thrives in rocky or sandy substrates common in mountain areas. From an agrotechnical perspective, it is a low-maintenance plant that is highly resistant to frost and wind, but it does not tolerate waterlogged soils, which can quickly lead to root decay in cold, damp climates.

The primary utility of the Holly-leaved oak lies in forestry and ecological conservation. It is frequently utilized in slope stabilization projects to prevent soil erosion in steep, rugged terrains. While not a major commercial timber crop, its wood is valued for its density and durability in local woodworking. It also holds potential as an ornamental plant in temperate regions, appreciated for its evergreen, rugged appearance.
