Brant's oak

Brant's oak (Quercus brantii) is a perennial woody plant belonging to the Beech family (Fagaceae). In natural conditions, this species is a deciduous tree that plays a critical ecological role in the mountain ecosystems of its native range. Within an agricultural context, it is valued not only as a forest-forming species but also as a source of edible acorns that can be consumed after proper processing.

The native home of this oak is the region of Western Asia, including Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and Syria. The culture is most widespread in the Zagros Mountains, where it forms extensive woodlands. This species is perfectly adapted to a continental climate with hot, dry summers and cool winters, demonstrating high tolerance to drought conditions.

Botanically, Quercus brantii is characterized by medium size, often adopting a shrubby habit under unfavorable growing conditions. The leaves are leathery, with serrated edges and pubescent surfaces, which serves as a protective mechanism against moisture loss. The acorns of this species are larger than those of many European relatives and have a bitter taste due to a high concentration of tannins.

Cultivation practices require the selection of well-drained soils, preferably rocky or calcareous types. The tree is extremely sensitive to excess moisture, so it is essential to avoid waterlogged areas. Propagation is primarily by seed, using stratified acorns planted in the autumn immediately after harvest.

The economic significance of the crop includes:

• Use of timber for construction and woodworking.
• Harvesting acorns to produce flour after soaking and tannin removal.
• Use of bark in the leather industry due to high tannin content.
• Erosion control on mountain slopes and windbreak establishment.

Major threats to the stands include pests from the weevil family, which attack the fruit, and fungal bark diseases that develop under adverse temperature conditions. Prevention involves controlling stand density and performing timely sanitary thinning of affected trees to prevent the spread of infections.
