Palestine oak (Quercus calliprinos) is a robust evergreen species belonging to the Fagaceae family. Depending on the soil composition and altitude, it manifests as a small shrub or a sturdy tree reaching up to 10 meters in height. As a foundational species in Mediterranean maquis shrublands, it is well-regarded for its resilience to harsh environmental stresses, including high temperatures and rocky, nutrient-poor landscapes.
The native range of this species spans across the Eastern Mediterranean basin, encompassing countries such as Israel, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, and parts of Greece. It is highly adapted to the specific climate cycles of this region, characterized by mild, wet winters and long, arid summers. It excels in regions where other deciduous species would struggle to survive due to prolonged water deficits.
Botanical attributes include dark green, sclerophyllous leaves that possess spiny edges, effectively reducing water transpiration.
