The Holm oak (Quercus ilex L. subsp. ilex) is a large evergreen tree species belonging to the family Fagaceae. Known for its resilience and ability to thrive in diverse environments, it serves as a cornerstone species in Mediterranean forest ecosystems and agricultural landscapes.

Originating from the Mediterranean basin, the Holm oak has an extensive range covering Southern Europe, North Africa, and parts of the Middle East. It is a highly adaptable species, capable of growing on various terrains, from coastal cliffs to inland plains, provided the climate does not feature severe, prolonged sub-zero temperatures.

Botanically, the tree is characterized by its dense, rounded crown and leathery, dark green leaves that resemble holly leaves. The root system is deep and expansive, which is a critical evolutionary trait for surviving in rocky, arid, and nutrient-poor soils. The tree produces acorns, which are a vital energy source for native wildlife and livestock.

Cultivation requirements for the Holm oak focus primarily on soil drainage and site selection. While it is drought-tolerant once established, young plants require irrigation during the first three years. The soil should ideally be alkaline to neutral. In professional forestry, thinning and pruning are practiced to optimize acorn yield or timber quality, depending on the management goal.

Economic and agricultural uses of the Holm oak are significant and include:
