The native range of this species is confined to the southeastern United States, particularly within the coastal plains of Florida and neighboring regions. It is a specialist of the sandhill ecosystems, thriving in nutrient-poor sandy soils where competition from larger tree species is naturally limited by environmental stressors.

Botanically, the plant is adapted to frequent fire cycles, which are common in its habitat. Its subterranean structure is highly robust, allowing the plant to sprout vigorously after the above-ground biomass is consumed by flames.
