Originating from the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, the species typically thrives in foothills and mountainous terrain at elevations ranging from 3,000 to 6,000 feet. It is a defining component of oak-juniper woodland ecosystems, having evolved to survive on rocky, well-draining soils with limited seasonal rainfall.
Botanically, this tree is characterized by its moderate stature, generally reaching heights of 30 to 40 feet.
