Gargano buttercup

The Gargano buttercup (Latin: Ranunculus garganicus) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the diverse Ranunculaceae family. While not a commercial staple crop, it is a significant plant in ornamental horticulture and alpine gardening, valued for its delicate appearance and resilience in challenging environmental niches.

This species is native to the Mediterranean region, specifically endemic to the Gargano mountain area in Italy. In its natural habitat, it thrives in rocky, calcareous soils where competition from other vegetation is limited. Cultivation is generally restricted to temperate climates that mimic its native alpine environment, emphasizing the need for well-draining conditions to ensure long-term plant viability.

Botanically, the plant develops a rosette of deeply dissected, dark green basal leaves. The flower stalks are typically short, bearing bright yellow flowers with the glossy, waxy petals typical of the Ranunculus genus. The root system consists of thickened roots or short rhizomes, which allow the plant to store essential nutrients to support early spring regrowth and subsequent flowering.
