Creeping buttercup (Ranunculus repens) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. While it is often appreciated in ornamental gardening for its bright yellow blooms, in the agricultural sector, it is classified as a troublesome weed that can cause significant yield losses in pastures and wet cropland.

The species originated in Europe and parts of Asia but has successfully naturalized across North America and other temperate regions. Its natural habitat includes damp meadows, riverbanks, and areas with poor drainage. In farming systems, it thrives in compacted or waterlogged soils where it forms dense colonies that outcompete more desirable forage or crop species.

Botanically, the plant is distinguished by its creeping stolons that root at the nodes, allowing it to spread rapidly across the soil surface. The leaves are compound and typically trifoliate, emerging from a basal rosette. The plant produces distinctive yellow flowers from late spring through summer, which contribute to a massive seed bank in the soil if not managed before ripening.

Effective management strategies require addressing the environmental conditions that favor the plant. Improving soil drainage and performing proper liming to reduce soil acidity are essential steps. Mechanical control should focus on removing the stoloniferous root system, as tillage that merely cuts the stems without removing the nodes can inadvertently facilitate its propagation.

Economically, creeping buttercup is considered a negative factor for livestock health. The plant contains protoanemonin, a toxin that can irritate the skin and digestive tract of grazing animals. While the toxins typically dissipate during the drying process of haymaking, the plant's presence still reduces the overall biomass and nutritional quality of the forage provided to livestock.
