Description
The celery-leaved buttercup (Ranunculus sceleratus) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. In an agronomic context, it is considered a problematic weed that thrives in wet environments, such as wetlands, muddy pastures, and field depressions where water drainage is poor.
This species is widely distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe, Asia, and North America. It prefers nitrogen-rich, waterlogged soils. Its presence in agricultural fields often serves as a bio-indicator for land requiring improved drainage infrastructure or moisture management interventions.
Botanically, the plant features a succulent, hollow, branched stem that can grow up to 60 centimeters high. It is characterized by deeply lobed leaves and small, yellow flowers. The plant produces a high density of achenes in a cylindrical seed head, facilitating rapid spread across disturbed or wet soil surfaces.
Agronomic control requires a multipronged approach. The most effective strategy is the implementation of adequate field drainage and soil moisture control. Mechanical removal or mowing before flowering is essential to prevent seed dispersal. Chemical management using selective herbicides is common in areas where manual removal is impractical.
The plant has no agricultural utility and poses significant risks due to the potent toxin protoanemonin. It is highly toxic to livestock when consumed fresh, causing blistering of the mouth and severe gastrointestinal distress. Diseases affecting the plant include various powdery mildews, while pests usually consist of generalist leaf-feeding insects.
